Question

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a business easy for AI assistants to find, understand and recommend. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overviews for a business like yours, AEO is what puts your name in the written answer, described accurately and with a reason to choose you.

The answer, expanded

An answer engine is any system that replies to a question with written prose. A customer types or says what they need, and the reply arrives as a paragraph that names two or three businesses, explains why each fits and sometimes links the pages it drew on. Answer engine optimization is the discipline aimed at that paragraph. Its goal is simple to state: when the question matches what a business does, the business should be one of the names.

The definition has three working parts. Found means the assistant can retrieve facts about the business when it searches. Understood means those facts agree with one another, so the assistant knows which business it is reading about, what it sells and where it operates. Recommended means the assistant has a specific reason to name it for this particular question, usually a detail drawn from the business's own pages, its reviews or a local publication.

A worked example from the Peninsula

Take a question that Bay Area AEO uses in its own demonstration: “Can you recommend a dentist in San Mateo who's good with anxious patients and takes Delta Dental?” There is no single web page that answers it. The assistant has to find dentists in San Mateo, check which ones accept that insurance plan, and look for evidence about patient comfort, which usually lives in review text. Then it writes two or three names.

A practice that states its accepted PPO plans on its site and profiles, explains its treatments in plain language, keeps its listings identical across Google, Bing, Apple Maps and Yelp, and has reviews in which patients mention comfort by name gives the assistant everything it needs for that sentence. Those are exactly the signals Bay Area AEO lists for dentists. AEO is the work of putting them in place, question by question.

AI assistants don't rank ten websites. They read what's written about your business across the web, decide who fits the question, and recommend a few names. — Bay Area AEO, describing the shift its work responds to

What the work consists of

In practice AEO breaks into four kinds of task, which are also the four services Bay Area AEO lists. An AI visibility audit asks the major assistants the questions customers ask and records who is named. Entity and listing cleanup makes the business's name and hours, its services and its other details consistent on every platform AI reads. Answer-ready content gives the assistant service pages and FAQs it can quote, backed by structured data. Citation and review work earns mentions in local press and guides, and in directories, and invites customers to describe what the business does best.

The same work under other names

The field has several names, and buyers meet all of them in proposals. AEO is the term Bay Area AEO uses. Generative engine optimization (GEO), AI optimization (AIO), AI SEO and LLM SEO describe the same goal from slightly different angles: the engines that write answers, the AI systems in general, search engines adapted for AI, and the language models underneath. The comparison entry GEO vs AEO takes the most common pair in detail.

How it differs from SEO

Search engine optimization works toward a position in a list of links. AEO works toward a sentence. The two overlap, because many AI answers are built from pages a search engine has already indexed, but the unit of success changes. A business can hold a strong organic ranking and still be described vaguely in an AI answer if its listings disagree or its reviews say little about what it does. AEO adds listings, review language, structured data, third-party sources and the clarity of a site's answers to the list of things that matter. The full comparison is at AEO vs SEO.

Who uses AEO

Any business whose customers ask an assistant before they choose. Bay Area AEO works with four industries in the Bay Area (food and drink; health and wellness; professional services; home services), forty niches in all. The questions differ by niche. A diner asks about a birthday dinner for six in Palo Alto; a homeowner asks for a plumber in Hayward who can come today; a family asks for an estate planning attorney who understands stock options. In each case the answer names a few businesses, and AEO is how a business becomes one of them.
