AEO vs Local SEO

comparison · answer engine optimization and local search engine optimization

Local SEO works to place a business in Google's map results for nearby searches. AEO works to get that business named when a customer asks an AI assistant a local question. The listings that feed one also feed the other, which makes local SEO a natural foundation for AEO.

The shared foundation

Local SEO and AEO both begin with the same plain facts: the business name and address, the phone number, the hours and the services, stated identically everywhere. Local SEO cares most about the Google Business Profile. AEO cares about that profile too, because Gemini and Google's AI Overviews draw on Google's data, and then widens the circle. Copilot leans on Bing Places, Siri draws on the same kinds of listing data, and ChatGPT or Perplexity read whatever pages their searches retrieve. Bay Area AEO's Entity & Listing Cleanup service exists for this reason: AI pulls facts from Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp and the industry directories, and the business's details need to match in every one of them. What AI answers add

A map result lets the customer do the comparing. An AI answer does the comparing first and explains its choice, so it needs material a map does not show. Bay Area AEO builds five signals for that purpose.

Table. The five AEO signals Bay Area AEO builds for a business.
SignalWhat it means
Consistent listingsName, hours and address match on Google, Bing, Apple Maps and Yelp.
Specific reviewsCustomers describe what the business does best, in their own words.
Answer-ready websiteClear pages that answer the exact questions people ask AI.
Structured dataSchema markup tells AI the services, service area and hours.
Trusted mentionsLocal press, guides and directories mention the business by name.

The first signal is local SEO territory already. The other four move the work toward AEO. Specific reviews give the assistant words to repeat. An answer-ready website gives it a page to quote. Structured data states the service area and hours in machine-readable form, and trusted mentions in local press, guides and directories give it outside confirmation.

Neighborhood questions

Bay Area customers rarely ask for a city alone. They name a neighborhood, a landmark or a condition. Bay Area AEO's San Francisco page lists questions of that kind:

A local SEO campaign might target “restaurant San Francisco”. The assistant answering “restaurant near Oracle Park before a Giants game” has to know which restaurants sit near the ballpark and suit a pre-game meal. Bay Area AEO helps San Francisco businesses earn those spots with neighborhood relevance, consistent listings and coverage in the local guides and publications AI cites. Its coverage names 18 San Francisco neighborhoods, from the Mission District to the Sunset District.

How many people ask

Bay Area AEO publishes local estimates of AI use for each place it covers. For San Francisco the figures are these.

The difference, trade by trade

The gap between a map listing and an AI answer shows most clearly in the details each trade has to publish. Bay Area AEO's niche pages set them out. For plumbers, the page asks for emergency availability and hours stated consistently on the website and every listing, service pages with pricing context for work such as water heaters or sewer lines, and the CSLB C-36 license number matched to state records. A map pin cannot carry most of that. An assistant answering “emergency plumber in San Jose open on Sunday” needs it in text it can read.

For restaurants the page lists text menus that give dish names with prices and dietary labels, short pages for private dining and large groups, and hours and holiday closures kept identical across Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing and the reservation platforms. A local SEO campaign keeps the profile current. AEO adds the pages that let an assistant answer “kid-friendly restaurants in San Mateo with outdoor seating” with a name and a reason.

Running both together

For a Bay Area business the order of work is simple. Fix the listings first, since that helps the map and the assistants at once, and Bay Area AEO states that listing and data fixes can start showing up in AI answers within a few weeks. Then build the content and reviews, along with the third-party mentions that AI answers rely on; those build over two to four months. The monthly prompt panel shows the answers changing. A business that already invests in local SEO keeps every gain it has made there: the same accurate profile that earns a place on the map is the record Gemini and AI Overviews read first, and the review language that persuades a map browser is the language an assistant repeats when it explains its choice. The wider mechanics are covered in how AEO works in the Bay Area and on the reference site's Bay Area local search entry.
