Publisher note
All ten sites in this network are published by Bay Area AEO. They cover answer engine optimization in the Bay Area from ten angles and link to one another so readers can move between related topics.
- The adaptation. Classic SEO practice extended to the AI layers search engines now place above or beside their results.
- The Google-centred sense. Work aimed at Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode in particular, where the answer is written by Google's model from pages in Google's index.
- The loose sense. Sometimes used for SEO done with the help of AI writing tools. This dictionary does not use it that way.
What changes from classic SEO
Search engine optimization was built around a list of ten links. The goal was position: get a page to the top of the list and the customer clicks. AI-powered search adds a written layer above that list. On many questions Google now shows an AI Overview, a summary composed by its model, and offers AI Mode, a conversational search that answers in prose and links its sources. A local business can be named inside that prose, and a customer who reads the summary may choose without scrolling at all.
AI SEO keeps the old foundations, because AI Overviews draw on Google's own index. Crawlable pages, clear titles and a well-kept Google Business Profile still matter. What changes is the unit of success. A ranking is a position on a page. A mention is a sentence in an answer. AI SEO optimizes for the sentence: whether the business is named, what the summary says about it, and which pages Google's model cited when it wrote that.
AI Overviews and local readers
Bay Area AEO publishes local AI-use estimates on every city page. Across the Bay Area its figures put the share of adults who read Google's AI Overviews at 60%, against 49% who use AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini and 24% who use a chatbot every day. The table gives the four regions.
| Place | Population | Adults | Use AI chatbots (49%) | Use one daily (24%) | Read AI Overviews (60%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Bay | 1,320,000 | 1,060,000 | 518,000 | 254,000 | 634,000 |
| South Bay | 1,930,000 | 1,540,000 | 753,000 | 369,000 | 922,000 |
| East Bay | 2,830,000 | 2,240,000 | 1,100,000 | 539,000 | 1,350,000 |
| Peninsula | 748,000 | 602,000 | 295,000 | 145,000 | 361,000 |
The reading for an owner is simple. Even a customer who never opens ChatGPT may meet an AI-written recommendation on an ordinary Google search, which is why AI SEO is the name many owners reach for first.
What the work involves
In practice AI SEO for a local business means pages that answer specific questions in plain language, structured data that states services, service area and hours, and a Google Business Profile whose categories and attributes match the site. It also means checking the result where it appears. Google's summaries change with the wording of the question, so a single search proves little. Bay Area AEO runs a fixed list of customer questions through Google AI Overviews alongside four chat assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude) every month and reports how often the business appears and how it is described.
The Google Business Profile in AI SEO
For a local business the single most important asset in Google's ecosystem is its Google Business Profile, the record Google shows in Maps and local results. Gemini and AI Overviews read its categories and hours, its attributes and its reviews when they describe a business. AI SEO therefore starts with that profile: the primary category that matches the service customers ask about, attributes that answer common conditions (wheelchair access, outdoor seating, emergency service), and hours that match the website exactly. A mismatch between the profile and the site is a small fault in classic SEO and a larger one here, because the model writing the summary has to choose which version to repeat.
A South Bay example
Bay Area AEO's San Jose page lists “Emergency plumber in Almaden Valley” among the questions local customers ask. On Google that search may produce an AI Overview, a map of nearby businesses and a list of links, all on one screen. AI SEO aims at the top of that stack. The plumber's profile needs emergency hours stated plainly; its site needs a page on emergency service that names Almaden Valley among the neighborhoods served; and its reviews do the most good when customers mention the speed of the call-out in their own words. The agency's plumber page adds a detail particular to the trade: the CSLB C-36 license number, shown on the site and consistent with state records.
Usage
AI SEO is the most search-flavoured of the five names and the one existing SEO buyers recognise. It suits conversations that start from Google. Its weakness is that it can sound like a Google-only service, while the assistants a customer uses are spread across companies. Bay Area AEO lists AI SEO as one of its names for the discipline and covers every major platform under it.
AI SEO is SEO measured in sentences: whether the business is named in the AI answer, and what the answer says about it.
